freeintellectualdiscourse:

typography is my latest obsession. maybe it’s having a friend who will do nothing but talk about the power of type and oh, look at the height of the ascenders in that font, how ridiculously inefficient. or maybe it’s the fact that i’ve seen the helvetica documentary twice in the past month and now can’t stop point out the usage of that typeface in storefront signs. (keep your eyes peeled, it’s everywhere.) regardless of the reasoning, type is something worth looking at, worth studying and taking note of. it’s the world’s most under appreciated, unnoticed art form.

Oh oh diacritics; be still my heart. I can forgive HANDS for diacritics any day.

Well, English doesn’t have a ton of diacritics or fun obscure letters, but it does have all sorts of random spellings! So it’s got that going for it, which is nice.

The Ten Brands That Will Disappear In 2010 – 24/7 Wall St.

The Ten Brands That Will Disappear In 2010 – 24/7 Wall St.:
shooshee:

It doesn’t come out until January 8, so this was a real treat. It also served as the press screening; Roger Ebert and his wife sat two rows behind us.

Even better, Cera and Doubleday were on hand for a Q&A with our host, Steve Prokopy (“Capone” on Ain’t It Cool News) and the audience. I managed to get video of a few of the questions — linked on my YouTube channel — including Cera singing (under mild duress) “These Eyes” at the end:

The movie is pretty fun — imagine if Wes Anderson made a screwball teen romantic comedy. There’s sex-crazed boys and girls, crazy stunts and oddball characters — but also mannered, erudite dialog and a close attention to design details. Michael Cera plays your standard Michael Cera role, but also one that’s very different from that, an alter ego whose influence waxes and wanes as things go better or worse. I’m not sure how much longer Cera can pull off basically the same character over and over, but here we get a glimpse of what it might be like if and when he breaks out of his typecast prison. Definitely worth seeing come January.

25 Media Maxims from Ken Auletta

25 Media Maxims from Ken Auletta:
“No more Old Media magic.
I had this Root Beer a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with it. It’s so tasty, it’s not syrupy thick, it’s just right. I highly recommend tracking one down and trying it.
